The financial assistance is appreciated, but Juanita Barr’s scholarship came with an acknowledgement of past wrongs, and that’s especially gratifying to her.

Last year, Barr received $2,000 from Middleton Place Foundation to help pay for graduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in nutrition sciences.

She was the only one to receive financial support in 2020 because Middleton Place’s scholarship program was brand-new, not yet well funded, and no one but her applied.

High school seniors invited to apply for Smart Choices Scholarship Program

Applications are now open for the 2022 Smart Choices Scholarship Program.

Sponsored in conjunction with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Gesa Credit UnionDairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires, it will award three $5,000 scholarships and 12 $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from WIAA member high schools for excellence in athletics/activities, academics, leadership and community service throughout their high school careers.

A New South Wales government program aimed at convincing professionals to become maths teachers attracted only six people last year, five of whom dropped out before their scholarships were complete.

As the state’s public school teachers prepare for their first strike in almost a decade on Tuesday, new figures have cast doubt on the success of the government’s attempts to address teacher shortages in NSW without significantly increasing pay.
